Why Eat Local?

  • It brings accountability to food production (when you get to know farmers in your area you can ASK them about their use of pesticides, what they mean by "cage free" or "free range," and can be a customer with a face); our current food production system does little to encourage farmers to strive for excellence, it only rewards cheap output
  • It's one of the most practical ways to save the planet (sounds hokey, admittedly, but buying local would go a LONG way toward reducing greenhouse gases, chemical pollution of the soil, and mistreatment of the poor in the countries where we get our food)
  • It isn't irradiated (food that has to be shipped long distances is irradiated to "protect" it, but irradiating food can lead to dangerous chemical changes in your food, like the creation of free radicals)
  • It helps small farmers (small farms tend to use fewer chemicals, grow more than one crop at a time-which is ecologically healthier and better for pest control, and keep food production from becoming a monopoly)
  • It is healthier (fresh foods contain more nutrients--and food from farmer's markets is picked much more recent to your purchase)
  • It is sustainable (our earth can't support our current shipping of food system indefinitely)
